TB119 - Yunomi Tea Cup Osuna-yaki 御砂焼
This handcrafted Yunomi (湯吞) tea cup comes from Tōsai Kiln (陶齋窯) on the sacred island of Miyajima (宮島), one of the few places in Japan where the historic tradition of Osunayaki (御砂焼) is still preserved.
Osunayaki is a unique style of pottery distinguished by its use of sand taken from the grounds of Itsukushima Shrine, giving the clay a distinctive texture and natural speckling. This rare material infuses each piece with a deep cultural connection to the island’s Shinto heritage.
The cup features a warm, earthy glaze with soft brown gradations and a gentle crackle pattern, creating a subtle wabi-sabi character. Horizontal throwing lines emphasize its hand-thrown form, while kiln marks near the foot authenticate its origin from Tōsai Kiln, a workshop known for preserving traditional Miyajima ceramic techniques.
Tōsai Kiln is celebrated for its dedication to crafting vessels that blend simplicity, elegance, and spiritual resonance. Their Osunayaki wares often display quiet beauty—humble, tactile, and deeply rooted in place.
