SHP416 - Original Japanese Shikishi Calligraphy 李適
A striking original Japanese shikishi calligraphy artwork featuring the classical Chinese-style couplet:
“A person of great renown may occupy a low position;
an exceptional bird may rest upon a humble branch.”
This phrase forms part of a well-known classical couplet associated with Tang-dynasty poetry, and is often attributed to Li Shi (李適) in the poem 《答宋十一崖口五渡見贈》, or transmitted through similar classical poetry anthologies.
True talent and worth are not always reflected by social position. A person of great ability may remain in a modest role, just as a remarkable bird may temporarily rest upon a low branch.
The verse therefore carries themes of humility, patience, dignity, and confidence in one’s inner worth despite circumstances.
The calligraphy is executed in bold, flowing black ink, with strong variations in brush pressure that give the characters both weight and movement. The spacious arrangement allows each phrase to breathe, creating an elegant balance between strength and restraint.
