A charming original Japanese manga-style line drawing on shikishi board, dated Shōwa 41 (昭和41年 / 1966) and titled 「一室描く」 (Isshitsu Egaku), which may be understood as “Sketching the Room” or, more naturally in the context of the image, “Drawing the People in the Room.”

Executed with quick, confident black-ink strokes, the composition brings together a lively group of male faces, each rendered with distinctive features, hairstyles, glasses, and expressions. Rather than a formal portrait, the artist appears to have captured the atmosphere of an actual gathering—perhaps a meeting, studio, club, or social occasion—turning the people present into affectionate caricatures.

The loose, spontaneous quality is strongly reminiscent of mid-Shōwa manga and newspaper illustration, where personality is communicated through only a of economical lines. Some faces are carefully outlined while others remain almost fragmentary, giving the work the immediacy of a sketch made directly from life. Small notations around several figures further suggest that the individuals may have been known to the artist, making the piece feel like a visual record of a particular moment and group.

A wonderfully personal piece of Shōwa-era Japanese graphic art, combining the informality of a private sketch with the expressive visual language of vintage manga and caricature. Particularly appealing for collectors of Japanese illustration, manga history, shikishi art, and unusual mid-century ephemera.
