A vintage Japanese shikishi calligraphy piece from Hachijōji Temple (八浄寺) on Awaji Island, Hyōgo Prefecture. The temple is a historic Shingon Buddhist site and forms part of the Awaji Island Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, where it is associated with Daikokuten, the deity of good fortune and prosperity.
The inscription is titled 日常五心 — Nichijō Goshin, meaning “The Five Hearts of Daily Life.” It presents five simple attitudes considered essential for living with sincerity, humility and gratitude:
A sincere and receptive heart that says, “Yes.”
A reflective heart that can say, “I am sorry.”
A humble heart that recognises the help and blessings of others.
A spirit of service that says, “I will do it.”
A grateful heart that says, “Thank you.”
The text is presented on a square shikishi board and mounted within a distinctive round, fabric-covered display frame. Its restrained neutral tones, dark cord details and traditional calligraphy give the piece a quiet, contemplative character.
