A poetic vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) calligraphy artwork featuring a short verse inspired by the traditional summer scenery of ayu fishing (鮎釣り) along a Japanese river.

Ayu (鮎), or sweetfish, is one of the most characteristic river fish of the Japanese summer. Traditionally caught in clear mountain rivers, ayu is especially prized when simply grilled over charcoal with salt (ayu no shioyaki).

For generations, the sight of anglers standing in a river, followed by the fragrance and smoke of freshly grilled fish along the kawara (河原 / riverbank), has been a familiar image of rural Japanese summer life. Ayu also appears frequently in haiku and seasonal poetry, where it serves as a kigo associated with summer.
