This shikishi artwork, titled 「春待ちの赤べこ」(Akabeko Awaiting Spring), is a gentle and poetic portrayal of one of Japan’s most cherished folk symbols. The bright red Akabeko—an iconic papier-mâché cow from Aizu associated with protection, health, and perseverance—is painted with a warm, endearing presence. Its rounded form and expressive eyes are rendered with confident yet soft brushwork, accented by touches of yellow, black, and white. Decorative cords and patterned details suggest care and tradition, emphasizing the Akabeko’s role as a talisman rather than a mere toy.

Beneath the figure, a slender branch of early plum blossoms stretches quietly across the composition. The tiny pink buds, just beginning to open, evoke the transition from winter to spring and give visual meaning to the title “awaiting spring.” The generous use of negative space enhances this feeling of stillness and anticipation, allowing the Akabeko to appear calmly poised, embodying patience, endurance, and hope for renewal.

The work is signed 清筆 (Seihitsu), indicating that it was “painted by Sei,” with 清 (Sei) as the artist’s name. This traditional form of signature underscores the calligraphic sensibility of the piece and situates it within the lineage of hand-painted shikishi art. Presented in a glossy red lacquer frame that echoes the Akabeko’s vivid color, the artwork becomes a harmonious and auspicious display—one that quietly celebrates folk belief, seasonal change, and the enduring warmth of Japanese cultural symbols.
