K30019 - Togatta by Yoshiaki Sato 佐藤好秋
This is a striking Togatta-style kokeshi crafted by Yoshiaki Sato (佐藤好秋, 1906–1991), a respected traditional kokeshi artisan from Miyagi Prefecture. This piece exemplifies the classic features of the Togatta lineage, known for its simple elegance and delicate facial expressions.
Yoshiaki Sato’s dolls are easily recognized by their bold and minimalistic design. This particular kokeshi features a rounded head with a darkly painted hairstyle and serene expression, her eyes gently closed in a soft smile. The body is long and slightly tapered, adorned with his signature red swirling motifs—stylized plum blossoms or flowing brushstrokes that give the figure a graceful rhythm and movement.
Satō Yoshiaki was a traditional kokeshi craftsman of the Togatta lineage, active primarily in the mid to late 20th century. Though his earliest creations made at Zao Yorozuya no longer exist, his recognizable works begin from around 1933, following the establishment of a water turbine mill. Early on, his brushwork was firm yet faithfully inherited from Matsunoshin, a key figure in the Togatta tradition.
