This striking Traditional Tsugaru kokeshi by 佐藤佳樹 (Yoshiki Sato, 1949–2007) is a vivid and highly distinctive example of the Tsugaru style, blending playful elegance with bold regional character.

The doll features the graceful hourglass silhouette associated with Tsugaru kokeshi. A bright yellow band at the waist creates a lively visual contrast and emphasizes the dynamic turning work of the piece. The face is charming and expressive, with softly painted eyes, rosy cheeks, and delicate lips beneath a traditional coiffure topped with a rounded mage hairstyle.

What makes this kokeshi especially unique is the dramatic daruma face motif painted on the lower body. Rendered in bold black, red, and gold tones, the daruma introduces an energetic folk-art element rarely seen in more conventional floral Tsugaru designs. The combination of elegant feminine form with spirited daruma imagery reflects the playful creativity and individuality for which Tsugaru craftsmen are admired.

Yoshiki Sato was born in 1949 as the eldest son of renowned Nukuyu kokeshi artisan Zenji Sato. After studying woodworking machinery in Odawara, he returned home in 1971 to apprentice under his father and began producing kokeshi seriously around 1972. Following his father’s passing in 1985, Yoshiki continued the family tradition while also helping promote Tsugaru kokeshi nationwide through exhibitions and live demonstrations. He later served as chairman of the Tsugaru Kokeshi Craftsmen’s Association, becoming an important figure in preserving and advancing the regional tradition.

This piece beautifully captures the spirited essence of Tsugaru craftsmanship — bold yet refined, humorous yet deeply traditional. A wonderful collector’s example that highlights both Yoshiki Sato’s technical skill and the vibrant folk heritage of northern Japan.
