This is a classic Naruko-style kokeshi doll crafted by the esteemed Takahashi Sakari (高橋盛, 1890–1973), a master woodcarver who played a central role in the evolution of Naruko kokeshi during the early to mid-20th century. Measuring 23 cm, this piece is a fine example of the Naruko tradition with its cylindrical body, gentle curves, and distinctive floral motifs.

Born in Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture, Sakari began his training in 1904 under his father Takahashi Kanji. He started making kokeshi dolls as a teenager and continued the family tradition after his father’s death in 1921. His career spanned various significant periods of kokeshi history—most notably his work at the Naruko Woodcarving Crafts Association and later as a teacher at the Akita Prefectural Crafts Guidance Center, where he trained several future masters, including Minagawa Genichi and Sasaki Sueji.

This doll showcases his signature style: large chrysanthemum-like floral patterns, vibrant yet earthy hues, and a peaceful, smiling face. The balance and fullness of form reflect Sakari’s deep understanding of proportion and folk aesthetics.

After World War II, Sakari returned to Naruko and continued to produce kokeshi while mentoring new generations of craftsmen. He worked closely with Takahashi Musashi during the postwar reconstruction era and contributed to the popularization of kokeshi through live demonstrations across Japan.

Sakari passed away in 1973, but his influence endures in the works of his descendants and apprentices. This doll is not only a charming piece of folk art but also a tangible link to one of Naruko's most formative artisans.
