This distinctive vintage Omiyage Kokeshi comes from Hakone Onsen (箱根温泉) in Kanagawa Prefecture, one of Japan’s most famous hot-spring and mountain resort areas.
The doll has a striking, sculptural construction made from several contrasting wooden sections. Its large rounded head features a calm, almost meditative expression, with finely painted black hair and minimal facial details. The body combines with polished mountain cherry bark (yamazakura, 山桜), giving the piece a strong rustic character.
Hand-painted Japanese calligraphy and expressive black brushwork decorate both the upper and lower sections, accompanied by touches of green and earthy colour. Rather than using the floral patterns associated with many traditional kokeshi schools, this piece has a much more graphic and modern folk-art appearance, typical of regional souvenir kokeshi created to evoke the atmosphere of a particular destination.
Hakone has long been associated with onsen culture, mountain scenery, wooded landscapes, and traditional woodcraft, making wooden souvenirs an especially fitting reminder of a visit to the region. Pieces like this were produced for travellers as keepsakes, combining local identity with the creativity of postwar Japanese omiyage design.
Its unusual proportions, visible natural wood textures, handwritten decoration and softly aged surface make it a particularly characterful example of Shōwa-era Japanese travel culture.
