K20168 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Matsushima 松島
This distinctive vintage omiyage kokeshi from Matsushima (松島) is a charming tribute to the legendary haiku poet Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉, 1644–1694) and his celebrated travel diary Oku no Hosomichi (『奥の細道』, The Narrow Road to the Deep North).
The composition depicts Bashō as a warmly expressive wooden figure, dressed in dark travelling robes and wearing his characteristic simple head covering. Beside him stands a rustic section of natural wood bearing the inscription 「奥の細道」, while the smaller wooden block is marked 「松島」, identifying its origin from one of Japan’s most famous scenic destinations.
Matsushima, in present-day Miyagi Prefecture, was one of the important stops during Bashō’s journey through northern Japan in 1689. Celebrated for its hundreds of pine-covered islands scattered across the bay, the landscape left a profound impression on travellers and poets and became closely associated with the literary world of Oku no Hosomichi.
