This Naruko-style kokeshi was crafted by Toshio Sato (佐藤俊雄, 1935–), a second-generation artisan with deep ties to the traditional woodcraft of Miyagi Prefecture. With a height that emphasizes its elegant proportions, this doll is a beautiful example of classic Naruko form—featuring a conical body, a rounded head, and a softly smiling expression framed by bold black side hair and floral crown motifs.

Born in Iwate Prefecture in 1935, Sato began learning woodcarving at a young age, observing the skilled work at the Oikawa Masao Factory in Naruko. In 1952, he studied painting and coloring under the meticulous guidance of Onuma Shinbei, whose instruction left a lasting impact on Sato’s brushwork precision and style.

By 1957, Toshio had begun producing kokeshi dolls himself, blending technical accuracy with gentle expressiveness. In 1964, he established his own workshop in Naruko Onsen, where he not only created his own dolls but also supplied carved blanks to other artisans such as Takahashi Josuke and Onuma Kimiko.

This particular piece is decorated with bold, spiked chrysanthemum-like floral patterns—a hallmark of the Naruko tradition—executed with confidence and warmth. The kokeshi’s serene, rounded face and bright red detailing reflect the enduring charm and regional character that define Sato’s legacy in the kokeshi world.
