This traditional Naruko kokeshi was crafted by the esteemed artisan Shoji Sakurai (桜井昭二, 1927–2011), a respected figure in the world of kokeshi who helped shape the postwar identity of the Naruko tradition. Its body is adorned with elegantly hand-painted red irises, a motif that reflects both delicacy and seasonal beauty, a hallmark of Naruko kokeshi aesthetics.

Shoji Sakurai was born on January 1, 1927, in Naruko as the eldest son of Sakurai Mannojo and Kou, both skilled woodworkers. His early artistic education began at home; around the age of 14 or 15, he began learning to paint kokeshi dolls under the guidance of his mother, Kou. His talent was recognized early, with his name and work already introduced in the magazine Kou during his youth.

Over the decades, Sakurai became a key figure in the Naruko kokeshi community—not only through his own craft but also as a dedicated teacher. Among his students were several prominent artisans, including Igarashi Isamu, Yusa Yasuo, Onuma Koichi, and Yoshida Katsunori, helping to ensure the continuation of Naruko techniques and values. In 1972, his own son Akihiro Sakurai began learning woodcarving, continuing the family tradition into the next generation.

What set Sakurai apart was not just his technical excellence, but his enduring commitment to the craft. Even in his later years, he actively participated in the National Kokeshi Festival held annually in Naruko. This kokeshi is a beautiful representation of Sakurai’s mature style of graceful, dignified, and filled with quiet strength.
