K18133 - Yajiro Kokeshi by Yoshitaro Niiyama 新山吉太郎
This is a Yajirō-style kokeshi crafted by Yoshitaro Niiyama (新山吉太郎, 1934–2014), a respected artisan who carried on the legacy of the Niiyama family's kokeshi-making tradition in Miyagi Prefecture.
Born on September 30th, 1934, in Yamiya Yajiro, Fukuoka Village, Yoshitaro was the eldest son of farmer Niiyama Yoshio. He came from a distinguished lineage of kokeshi makers—his father Yoshio was the youngest son of Niiyama Hisajiro, making Yoshitaro the nephew of renowned craftsmen such as Hisajiro, Fukutaro, Sanai, and Sadao. Though he initially worked in farming, Yoshitaro began woodturning under the guidance of his cousin Niiyama Fukuo in 1972, and by 1975 had become independent as a kokeshi artisan while still maintaining his work in agriculture.
This piece showcases the classic features of the Yajirō kokeshi tradition: a tall form with a flared base, a slender waist, and vivid bands of red, purple, and green around the body. The doll’s head is adorned with a brilliant floral crown and a sweetly expressive face painted with Yoshitaro’s signature delicate touch.
Yoshitaro’s craftsmanship is recognized for its warmth and refinement, reflecting both his family heritage and his personal dedication to the folk art. His eldest son, Yoshinori Niiyama, began formal training under him in 1980, continuing the lineage. Yoshitaro passed away on May 18th, 2014, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy embedded in both kokeshi and the spirit of Yajirō tradition.
