K15154 - Omiyage Kokeshi of Twenty-Four Eyes 二十四の瞳

K15154 - Omiyage Kokeshi of Twenty-Four Eyes 二十四の瞳

This omiyage kokeshi display is inspired by the beloved Japanese literary classic “Twenty-Four Eyes” (二十四の瞳) from Shōdoshima (小豆島), the island forever associated with the story’s nostalgic seaside setting.

Carved from wood with warm simplicity, the piece features a smiling teacher figure standing among her young pupils, each rendered as tiny hand-painted kokeshi with individual expressions and hairstyles. Behind them stands a small sign reading “二十四の瞳 小豆島,” grounding the scene in the island that became famous through the novel and its film adaptations.

The original story begins in the 1920s, when the young teacher Miss Oishi arrives at a small rural school on Shōdoshima. Though the children are initially wary of her modern appearance and city manners, they soon become deeply attached to her gentle and compassionate nature. Over the course of nearly two decades, the story follows the lives of the twelve students—the “twenty-four eyes” watching the world together—as war, poverty, and loss gradually reshape their futures. Some are separated by hardship, while others are lost forever, making the tale one of Japan’s most moving reflections on innocence, memory, and the human cost of war.

This miniature folk-art scene beautifully captures the emotional warmth at the heart of the story. The natural wood grain, modest hand-painted details, and endearing expressions evoke the quiet nostalgia of postwar Japanese omiyage craftsmanship.

A meaningful collectible for admirers of Japanese literature, cinema, and traditional folk art, this charming display carries both sentimental beauty and cultural history from the shores of Shōdoshima.
