This set of Nipopo Dolls (ニポポ人形) showcases the traditional Ainu woodcraft associated with the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido, Japan. Carved from natural wood, each figure features a distinctive stacked totem-like structure representing a sequence of stylized animals and humanoid faces — most notably, owls, which are sacred creatures in Ainu culture and symbols of protection and wisdom.

These dolls originate from two well-known hot spring regions in Hokkaido: Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) and Tokachigawa (十勝川温泉). Both areas are known not only for their healing thermal waters but also for preserving Ainu cultural heritage through local crafts and souvenirs like these.

The name "Nipopo" comes from the Ainu word meaning “small wooden figure of a human”, and these dolls are often used as amulets for safety, good fortune, and warding off evil spirits. Their layered designs may incorporate bears, owls, and other regional animals, each imbued with symbolic meaning.

With variations in wood tone and carving detail, this set captures the earthy, spiritual essence of Ainu artistry — a rare and culturally significant folk craft that blends natural materials, animistic beliefs, and a deep respect for nature.
