A vintage Japanese Donko-style Kokeshi pair originating from the Tohoku region (東北地方) of northern Japan, the birthplace of traditional kokeshi craftsmanship.
These delightful wooden dolls represent the playful and creative spirit of Japanese folk art, featuring the distinctive rounded proportions and compact silhouettes associated with Donko-style kokeshi.
Unlike traditional cylindrical kokeshi, Donko dolls are recognised for their charming, plump forms and expressive personalities. Their simplified shapes and decorative designs give them a warm, nostalgic character.
Donko Kokeshi are a distinctive variation of Japanese wooden dolls, generally associated with the creative Sōsaku Kokeshi tradition.
Developed during the 20th century, these dolls depart from the strict regional forms of traditional kokeshi, embracing rounded silhouettes, imaginative designs, and individual artistic expression.
