This Omiyage Kokeshi comes from the Tōhoku region (東北) and is crafted in a distinctive hyōtan (瓢箪, gourd) form, combining regional souvenir culture with the rustic character of yakisugi (焼き杉) wood finishing.

The body is formed into a softly curving double-gourd silhouette, with deeply incised concentric lines that have been darkened to emphasize the grain and sculptural shape. This burnt-wood treatment creates a warm brown surface with strong blackened grooves, giving the doll a wonderfully earthy and tactile appearance. A braided cord with purple-and-cream tassels is tied around the narrow waist, adding a decorative textile accent.

Above the body sits a rounded wooden head painted with a gentle, slightly tilted expression. The delicately brushed black hair, narrow eyes, arched brows and small red lips contrast beautifully with the more rugged treatment of the body, giving the figure a quiet and contemplative character.

The gourd, or hyōtan, is a traditional auspicious motif in Japan. Because gourds contain many seeds and have long been used as practical vessels, they came to be associated with good fortune, prosperity, protection and continuity. Its distinctive double-lobed form also made it a popular motif in Japanese folk craft and decorative objects.
