K10221 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Shiraito Falls 白糸の滝
This delightful omiyage kokeshi set from Shiraito no Taki (白糸の滝) beautifully captures the charm and storytelling spirit of Japanese folk souvenirs.
Carved from wood and presented as a trio, each figure features a slender cylindrical body topped with a tall, pointed head, giving them a whimsical and slightly theatrical appearance. From left to right, the characters represent Tengu (天狗), Otafuku (お多福), and Daruma (だるま)—three iconic figures in Japanese folklore. The Tengu, with his expressive face and long-nosed features, is a protective mountain spirit; Otafuku, smiling gently, symbolizes joy, good fortune, and feminine grace; and Daruma, with his determined expression, represents perseverance and resilience.
Their bodies are adorned with bold brush calligraphy, adding an artistic, almost calligraphic rhythm to the composition. The figures are mounted together on a natural wooden base, enhancing their display as a unified scene.
Originating from Shiraito Falls, one of Japan’s most picturesque waterfalls located in Shizuoka Prefecture near Mount Fuji, this piece reflects the area’s long tradition of crafting meaningful souvenirs. Shiraito no Taki, known for its delicate, thread-like streams cascading over a wide rock face, has inspired artists and travelers for centuries, often symbolizing purity, tranquility, and the beauty of nature.
