K10158 - Omiyage Kokeshi Doll from Shuzenji 修善寺
This pair of omiyage (souvenir) kokeshi dolls comes from Shuzenji (修善寺), a historic hot spring town in Shizuoka Prefecture renowned for its scenic beauty, temples, and literary heritage. These kokeshi depict elegant figures in traditional attire, referencing figures from Japan's classical history.
The doll on the right, dressed in a stately blue kimono with a formal headpiece and a ceremonial cord, represents Minamoto no Yoritomo (源頼朝), the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate. Yoritomo is a celebrated figure in Japanese history, and according to legend, he sought refuge in Shuzenji during his exile. The doll is painted with dignified facial features and fine details, symbolizing his noble presence.
Both dolls are mounted on individual wooden bases, making this set not only a beautiful decorative item but also a meaningful historical memento tied to the legends of Shuzenji.
