FT616 - Maneki Neko Tsuchi Ningyō 土人形
This vintage Maneki Neko (招き猫) is a traditional Japanese tsuchi ningyō (土人形), or clay folk figurine, depicting an adorable mother cat accompanied by her little kitten. With its heartwarming composition and rustic appearance, this piece beautifully captures the simplicity and nostalgic charm of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
The figurine features a large white lucky cat sitting proudly beside a smaller kitten, both raising their paws to beckon good fortune. Their expressive yellow-and-black eyes, delicate painted whiskers, soft pink noses, and warm reddish-orange ears give them wonderfully endearing expressions.
The parent-and-child Maneki Neko (親子招き猫) adds another layer of symbolism to this familiar lucky charm. The pairing can be interpreted as representing family harmony, parental love, protection, and the wish for happiness across generations.
Tsuchi ningyō are traditional Japanese clay figurines that have been produced in various regions of Japan for centuries. Typically shaped using clay moulds and decorated with painted details, these folk crafts depict animals, deities, zodiac creatures, and other auspicious subjects.
Unlike finely glazed ceramics, clay folk figurines often retain a matte, slightly textured surface that emphasises their rustic character. Their simple forms, expressive faces, and traditional decorative techniques reflect the warmth and cultural heritage of Japanese folk art, or mingei.
