This charming vintage Japanese wooden dragon is a delightful example of Ittōbori (一刀彫), a traditional Japanese woodcarving technique celebrated for its bold, expressive cuts and simplicity of form. Created by the artisan Biun (美雲), the piece captures the spirited character of the dragon through playful proportions, angular carving, and delicate hand-painted details.

Carved from natural wood, the dragon features an elongated body, a lively expression, and distinctive black and red facial markings. Its body rests upon a rustic wooden log base with the original bark preserved, creating a beautiful contrast between the smooth, pale carving and the natural texture of the wood. Red and white decorative cords complete its traditional folk-art appearance.

In Japanese culture, the dragon (tatsu, 龍) is a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. Unlike the fearsome dragons often depicted in Western mythology, Japanese dragons are traditionally associated with water, protection, and benevolent spiritual forces. Dragon figurines are particularly appreciated as auspicious decorations, especially during the Year of the Dragon in the Japanese zodiac.

Condition: This vintage piece shows signs of age and use, including one missing horn. Despite this imperfection, it retains its wonderful handcrafted character and remains an appealing example of traditional Japanese wooden folk art.
