This vintage Japanese Ittō-bori (一刀彫り) wood carving depicts Jurōjin (寿老人), one of the Seven Lucky Gods (七福神, Shichifukujin) and a traditional symbol of longevity, wisdom, and good health.
Jurōjin is usually portrayed as an elderly sage with a high forehead, long flowing beard, and gentle expression, all clearly represented in this carving. Here he holds a tall staff in one hand and a large peach in the other. In East Asian symbolism, the peach is strongly associated with long life and immortality, reinforcing Jurōjin’s auspicious character.
The figure is carved in the rustic ittō-bori tradition, in which the marks of the carving tools remain deliberately visible rather than being polished away. Deep, confident cuts define the beard, robes, staff, facial features, and folds of the garment, while darker staining in the recessed areas brings out the sculptural relief and natural grain of the wood.
Particularly appealing is the warm expression of the face: the softly smiling eyes and long beard give Jurōjin a benevolent, almost humorous presence. The compact vertical form and restrained natural wood palette allow the carving itself to remain the focus.
