A charming traditional nerimono mechanical toy from Ise, Mie Prefecture, shaped as a bright red turtle carrying a smaller turtle on its shell. Its rounded, form is decorated with gold-toned lines suggesting the pattern of a tortoiseshell, while the large expressive eyes give the piece a playful folk-art character.
Ise has long been associated with woodworking. Nerimono toys were traditionally produced by mixing fine wood powder left over from woodworking with glue, then moulding the material into decorative and movable figures. This resourceful technique transformed workshop remnants into colourful toys full of regional personality.
This turtle is fitted with an ingenious traditional mechanism. A cord passes through the body, with a wooden pull handle at one end and an internal spinning wheel connected to rubber bands and small metal fittings. When the handle is pulled, the wheel rotates and sets the turtle in motion, allowing it to “run” across a flat surface.
In Japanese culture, the turtle—kame, 亀—is an auspicious symbol of longevity, good fortune and enduring happiness.
