This vintage Shamisen Bachi (三味線バチ) is a beautifully crafted traditional plectrum used to play the shamisen, Japan's iconic three-stringed instrument. Designed with a graceful curved wooden handle and a broad triangular striking blade, the bachi is an essential tool for producing the shamisen's distinctive crisp, resonant sound.

The handle features an elegant contrasting wood inlay that highlights the beauty of the natural grain, while its balanced shape provides a comfortable grip for precise playing. Accompanying the bachi is its original brocade storage sleeve, woven with vibrant chrysanthemum motifs in shimmering orange fabric—a traditional symbol of longevity, nobility, and refined Japanese craftsmanship.

For centuries, the shamisen has accompanied a wide range of Japanese performing arts, including Kabuki theatre, Bunraku puppet theatre, folk music (Min'yō), and Geisha entertainment. Beyond its musical function, a shamisen bachi represents the enduring artistry and cultural heritage of Japan's classical music traditions.

Whether appreciated as a collectible, displayed as a decorative object, or treasured by lovers of traditional Japanese music, this piece captures the timeless elegance of Japanese craftsmanship.

As a vintage item dating from the late Shōwa period (1970s–1980s), it shows gentle signs of age consistent with careful use and storage. The wooden blade has a small repaired area near the edge (please refer to the photographs), while the brocade sleeve displays light age-related wear, adding to its authentic vintage character.
