This vintage 干支一刀彫 (Eto Ittō-bori) zodiac boar is a beautifully simplified wood carving associated with Atsuta Jingū (熱田神宮), one of Japan’s most revered Shinto shrines located in Nagoya. Carved in a bold faceted style, the figure captures the strength and grounded spirit of the wild boar through clean angular cuts and warm natural wood grain.

The boar, or inoshishi (亥), is the final animal of the Japanese zodiac and traditionally symbolizes courage, determination, protection, and straightforwardness. In Japanese folklore, boars are admired for charging forward fearlessly, making them auspicious symbols of perseverance and resilience.

Executed in the spirit of traditional ittō-bori carving — literally “one-knife carving” — the sculpture retains visible knife-cut planes that emphasize the handcrafted process and rustic beauty of the wood itself. Small touches of black, white, and vermilion accents bring life to the face while preserving the minimalist aesthetic.

As a souvenir connected to Atsuta Jingū, the piece also carries a quiet spiritual association. The shrine, with a history of nearly two thousand years, is deeply tied to themes of protection, purification, and good fortune within Japanese culture.

Compact yet expressive, this zodiac carving is both a folk craft object and a symbolic talisman — a lovely collectible for admirers of Japanese woodcraft, shrine souvenirs, and traditional zodiac imagery.
