FT376 - Folk Craft Omiyage Glass Ukidama 浮き玉

These glass ukidama 浮き玉 are traditional fishing floats from 雉内 (Kijiuchi), a coastal area long connected to Japan’s maritime culture. Once used by fishermen to keep their nets buoyant at sea, glass floats like these were essential tools of everyday coastal life before being replaced by modern synthetic materials.

Each sphere is made of thick, sea-green blown glass, with visible air bubbles and subtle variations that reflect its handmade character. The floats are encased in protective rope netting, carefully tied to cushion the glass and provide attachment points for fishing lines. The twisted cords and looping tops not only served a practical purpose but now add rustic charm to the pieces.

Today, they are appreciated as nostalgic maritime folk crafts, embodying the spirit of coastal communities and Japan’s deep relationship with the sea. Decorative yet rooted in practical history, these glass floats evoke images of working fishing boats, ocean horizons, and the enduring craftsmanship of seaside villages.
