FT362 - Folk Craft of Bitchū Kagura Ningyō 備中神楽

This striking Bitchū Kagura Ningyō (備中神楽) is a bold folk craft from Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture (岡山県高梁市), inspired by the dramatic masked performances of Bitchū Kagura—one of western Japan’s most dynamic Shinto theatrical traditions.

Carved from wood and finished with a dark, charred tone that accentuates the natural grain, the figure takes the form of a powerful kagura mask. Fierce, wide eyes outlined in white and red, sharply angled brows, and a vivid vermilion mouth create an intense, protective expression. Straw elements form expressive eyebrows and whiskers, while thick braided rope frames the sides and forms a loop at the top, allowing the piece to be hung as a talisman.

Bitchū Kagura is known for its energetic performances depicting mythological tales from the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, often featuring heroic gods and demon-subduing scenes. The strong facial features of this doll reflect the theatrical masks worn during these performances, especially those representing powerful deities or oni (demons). Such imagery is traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and bring protection to the household.
