This refined pair of Ōuchi-nuri Ningyō 大内塗人形 Hina dolls is crafted by Miki Kōgeisho 美樹工芸所 of Yamaguchi Prefecture, a region celebrated for its elegant lacquer tradition known as Ōuchi-nuri. These dolls beautifully combine the classic form of hina ningyō (Doll Festival figures) with the distinctive techniques and aesthetics of Yamaguchi lacquerware.

Rounded in form and seated side by side on a black base, the Emperor and Empress are rendered in a charming, minimalist style. Their softly smiling white faces are delicately hand-painted with fine brows and small red lips, conveying serenity and grace. The bodies are finished in rich lacquer—deep black for the Emperor and warm vermilion for the Empress—embellished with traditional floral motifs in gold.

A defining feature of Ōuchi-nuri is its lustrous black and red lacquer accented with gold decoration, historically associated with the culture of the Ōuchi clan, who flourished in Yamaguchi during the Muromachi period. The gold detailing seen in the garments and accessories reflects this heritage of refined craftsmanship. The Empress holds a fan adorned with stylized pine motifs, symbolizing longevity and good fortune, while the Emperor carries a ritual baton, signifying courtly authority.

Compact yet dignified, this pair embodies both the festive spirit of Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) and the enduring elegance of Yamaguchi’s lacquer artistry. Presented in its original box, the set stands as a graceful expression of regional craftsmanship—where traditional festival imagery meets the refined surface beauty of Ōuchi lacquer.
