This folk crafted horse is a folk art piece from Mihama-gama (御浜窯), a kiln located in the Nanki region of Mie Prefecture. The horse's stylized form and detailing pay homage to the Haniwa Uma (埴輪馬) — ancient Japanese terracotta horse figures that were used as funerary objects during the Kofun period (3rd–6th century). These haniwa horses symbolized protection and served as guardians for the deceased, often representing strength, loyalty, and transportation to the afterlife.

Made in the warm earthy tones characteristic of 御浜焼 (Mihama-yaki) pottery, this piece reflects both traditional craftsmanship and historical resonance. The subtle glaze variations enhance its expressive features, from the intricate tack to the upright posture, creating a dignified and rustic presence.

御浜焼 developed in the Kumano region of Mie as part of a local revitalization initiative. Thanks to the area's rich clay deposits and scenic coastal environment, artisans created works that blend natural textures and serene coastal aesthetics. The resulting ceramics, like this horse, embody warmth, tradition, and timeless charm.
