This folk crafted horse is a folk art piece from Mihama-gama (御浜窯), a kiln located in the Nanki region of Mie Prefecture. The horse's stylized form and detailing pay homage to the Haniwa Uma (埴輪馬) — ancient Japanese terracotta horse figures that were used as funerary objects during the Kofun period (3rd–6th century). These haniwa horses symbolized protection and served as guardians for the deceased, often representing strength, loyalty, and transportation to the afterlife.
Made in the warm earthy tones characteristic of 御浜焼 (Mihama-yaki) pottery, this piece reflects both traditional craftsmanship and historical resonance.
