This vintage folk craft rabbit is a traditional Aizu hariko (会津張子) papier-mâché piece, handcrafted in the historic region of Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture. Made in the style associated with Aizu Bukeyashiki—the former samurai residence—the rabbit carries with it both auspicious symbolism and local heritage.

Painted in bright white with bold red accents and a colorful floral motif on its back, this figure exudes both warmth and positivity. In Japanese culture, rabbits symbolize good fortune, cleverness, and safe childbirth, making them a popular motif in folk crafts and New Year's decorations.

The craft of hariko (papier-mâché) in Aizu has flourished since the Edo period, valued for its lightweight yet sturdy construction and endearing designs. This particular rabbit may have also been used as an Eto (zodiac) ornament for the Year of the Rabbit, or simply as a protective charm.

Whether as a collectible folk art piece or a seasonal display item, this Aizu rabbit brings a gentle spirit and lucky charm to any home.
