This zodiac ornament depicts a parent and child rat—symbols of prosperity and cleverness—crafted in the traditional Shigaraki-yaki ceramic style by the artist 陶仙 (Tōsen). The expressive figures are glazed in a warm olive hue, with textured details that bring a sense of liveliness and character to the piece. The larger rat holds a plaque with the characters 「開運」 (kaiun), wishing for “good fortune,” while the smaller rat on the bell that reads 「福」 (fuku), meaning “blessing.”
Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼) pottery originates from Shiga Prefecture and is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, celebrated for its earthy tones, warm textures, and enduring charm.
Rooted in Japan’s ancient zodiac tradition (Eto/干支), the rat is the first sign of the twelve-year cycle and is revered for its intelligence, adaptability, and association with abundance and prosperity.
