A finely crafted pagoda tower, traditionally called a “Hyakumantō” (百万塔) — literally meaning “One Million Pagodas.” This piece replicates the historic Hyakumantō of Hōryū-ji, symbolizing peace, devotion, and Buddhist enlightenment. According to historical records, the Empress ordered the production of one million miniature pagodas as an offering of gratitude to the Buddha after a period of political unrest — specifically to commemorate the suppression of the Emi no Oshikatsu Rebellion.

The creation of the Hyakumantō represents an extraordinary feat of devotion and organization. Producing one million pieces in the 8th century would have required a vast mobilization of artisans, resources, and labor — something only an imperial initiative could achieve. It also reflects the profound influence of Buddhism on the Japanese state, where religious acts were intertwined with political stability and moral legitimacy.

Today, the surviving Hyakumantō are treasured as national treasures of Japan, admired not only for their spiritual meaning but also for their cultural and technological importance. They mark a milestone in the history of printing, artisanship, and Buddhist ritual, embodying the deep connection between faith, art, and imperial power in ancient Japan.
