This Ema (絵馬) plaque comes from Heian Jingū (平安神宮), one of Kyoto’s most celebrated shrines, renowned for its elegant architecture and close association with the cultural heritage of the ancient capital.

The plaque features a delicate depiction of the shrine’s iconic buildings rendered in a refined, painterly style. Executed in shades of vermilion, green, and white, the scene captures the graceful pavilions, bridges, and landscaped grounds that evoke the atmosphere of the Heian period. The composition is intentionally minimalist, with small figures strolling through the precincts, emphasizing the spacious serenity and timeless beauty of the shrine.

In the upper corner appears the seal 「平安神宮」, identifying the sacred site, while stylized pine branches float above the architecture. Pine trees have long symbolized longevity, perseverance, and auspicious fortune in Japanese tradition, making them a fitting motif for a shrine dedicated to the spirit of Kyoto’s imperial past.

The artwork reflects the architectural inspiration behind Heian Jingū itself. Built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto, the shrine reproduces elements of the ancient Heian Palace (平安宮) and serves as a living reminder of the city’s classical elegance. The vivid vermilion structures depicted on the Ema echo the shrine’s famous buildings and ceremonial gates.

Traditionally, visitors would inscribe their wishes on the reverse before offering the plaque at the shrine. Today, it also serves as a beautiful keepsake of Kyoto, embodying the harmony of architecture, landscape, and spiritual tradition that has made Heian Jingū one of the city's most beloved sacred places.
