CB340 - Kyō Ningyō Dorei Clay Bell Dragon 京人形
A vintage dorei clay bell featuring a traditional dragon motif, created in the style of Kyō Ningyō (京人形), the celebrated doll-making craftsmanship of Kyoto.
This distinctive bell is finished in a vibrant vermilion red, with a sculpted dragon curling gracefully around its rounded body. The dragon's expressive face, flowing mane, and textured scales give the piece a lively character, while a contrasting deep purple braided cord adds an elegant decorative touch. The slit at the base reflects the traditional construction of Japanese clay bells.
Kyō Ningyō (京人形) refers to traditional dolls and decorative figures associated with Kyoto, a city renowned for its centuries-old artistic heritage. The craft flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868), drawing inspiration from Kyoto's imperial court culture and skilled artisan communities. From elaborate Hina Ningyō to elegant Gosho Ningyō, Kyoto's doll-making traditions are celebrated for their refined craftsmanship, expressive forms, and delicate decoration. Folk-inspired ornaments such as this dragon bell reflect the broader Japanese tradition of decorative figures and auspicious objects.
In Japanese culture, the dragon (tatsu or ryū, 龍) symbolises strength, wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. As one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac (eto, 干支), it is particularly associated with vitality, ambition, and success. The vivid red colour further reinforces its auspicious character, as red is traditionally associated with protection and the warding off of misfortune.
Dorei are traditional Japanese earthenware bells, treasured as folk toys, decorative ornaments, and lucky charms. Their gentle rattling sound has long been associated with protective symbolism, making them popular as gifts and seasonal decorations.
