This charming Ox (丑 / Ushi) dorei clay bell was created by Yakushigama (薬師窯), one of Japan’s most beloved ceramic workshops, known for its auspicious zodiac ornaments and folk-inspired designs. Crafted in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic pottery centres, Yakushigama continues a ceramic tradition that stretches back more than a thousand years.

The bell depicts a gently rounded white ox with a friendly, simplified expression. Small accents in red, gold, pale pink and blue bring warmth to the figure, while the side of the body is decorated with a colourful circular floral motif in blue, green, red and gold. A red hanging cord passes through the top, completing its traditional dorei form.

In the Japanese zodiac, the Ox is associated with patience, diligence, reliability, perseverance and steady progress. Because the ox has long been connected with agricultural work and endurance, it is often regarded as a symbol of achieving success through consistent effort rather than haste.

As a dorei (土鈴), the piece also belongs to Japan’s long tradition of clay bells used as auspicious and protective folk objects. Their gentle sound has traditionally been associated with warding away misfortune and inviting good fortune, while zodiac dorei are especially popular as seasonal New Year decorations.
