CB163 - Dorei Clay Bell Kōyasan Hyakumachiji 高野山
This is a traditional Japanese dorei (clay bell) in the shape of a stone stupa (gorintō), originating from Kōyasan (高野山), one of Japan’s most sacred Buddhist sites located in Wakayama Prefecture. The bell is called the Kōyasan Hyakumachiji Dorei (高野山 百八町石 鈴), referring to the stone markers that line the historic pilgrimage route leading to the mountaintop temple complex.
The figure represents one of the Hyakumachiji (百八町石) — 180 traditional stone markers placed approximately every 109 meters along the old trail. Pilgrims counted these markers as they walked, using them as a spiritual journey of discipline and reflection. This bell commemorates that path, with each section of the gourd-like form etched with "ひゃくまちじ" (Hyakumachiji), and “百八町” (Hyakuhachichō) written at the base.
Crafted from unglazed terracotta clay, its simple yet rustic appearance reflects the natural aesthetic and spiritual solemnity associated with the pilgrimage. The piece is strung with a purple cord and comes with its original box and explanatory leaflet from the Kishū Kyōdo Gangu Kenkyūkai (紀州郷土玩具研究会), a local folk toy research association.
A meaningful piece for collectors of Japanese folk toys or those with an interest in Shugendō, pilgrimage culture, or Kōyasan heritage.
