CB130 - Dorei Clay Bell Aubergine and Fox

CB130 - Dorei Clay Bell Aubergine and Fox

This dorei clay bell is shaped like an aubergine (eggplant), with a whimsical, organic form and a gentle, rounded body. Handcrafted with soft colors, it features a stylized yellow fox and small green trees near the top, suggesting a serene natural scene, possibly inspired by Japanese folklore or countryside landscapes. The piece comes complete with its original box.

In Japanese culture, the aubergine—or nasu in Japanese—is more than just a vegetable. It is considered a symbol of good fortune and success, as the word nasu (成す) also means “to accomplish” or “to achieve.” The eggplant holds particular importance in the tradition of hatsuyume, or the first dream of the New Year. According to an old proverb, dreaming of Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant (ichi-Fuji, ni-taka, san-nasu) is believed to bring the best possible luck for the coming year.

The fox depicted on the bell adds a deeper layer of cultural meaning. In Japanese folklore, foxes (kitsune) are seen as mystical creatures—clever, watchful, and at times magical. They are also known as the messengers of Inari, the Shinto deity of rice, fertility, and prosperity. As such, the fox on this bell may also represent protection, abundance, and spiritual connection.

This aubergine-shaped dorei is not only a charming folk craft item but also a richly symbolic piece, evoking themes of luck, achievement, nature, and folklore. It would make a meaningful addition to any collection of traditional Japanese art or as a talisman for good fortune in the year ahead.
