CB107 - Dorei Clay Bell of Hachimangū 八幡宮

CB107 - Dorei Clay Bell of Hachimangū 八幡宮

This vintage dorei clay bell features a white rat (nezumi), the first sign of the Japanese zodiac and a symbol of resourcefulness, prosperity, and new beginnings. Created by Shōhō (昭峰), a ceramic artist known for his work with traditional Japanese folk forms, this bell is both decorative and meaningful.

The rat wears a vibrant purple vest with delicate floral accents and carries a golden ritual implement on its back, a sacred item often used in Shinto shrine ceremonies, representing divine presence and spiritual protection. This design connects the piece to Japan's rich religious and cultural traditions.

Stamped on the back is the red seal of Hachimangū (八幡宮) and the kanji 厄除 (yakuyoke), meaning "warding off evil" — signifying that this bell was likely offered as a talisman for protection and good fortune.

As a piece of omamori folk craft, this bell embodies the fusion of art, spirituality, and tradition, resonating not just with sound, but with blessings.

Size: 8 x 4 x 6cm
