VTT181 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hida 飛驒

This vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional wooden travel plaque from Hida (飛驒), a historic mountainous region in present-day Gifu Prefecture, renowned for its skilled craftsmanship and beautifully preserved old towns such as Takayama.

Carved in the classic pentagonal form, the plaque features rich natural wood grain with bold black calligraphy reading “通行手形”, accompanied by the inscription “天領飛驒国” (Tenryō Hida Province), referencing its past as land directly governed by the Tokugawa shogunate. The design evokes the spirit of Edo-period travel, when such passes symbolized safe passage through official routes.

The reverse carries a traditional explanatory inscription stating that this “travel pass” serves as a symbolic permit for journeys across Japan, along with multiple red seal stamps that enhance its authenticity and nostalgic appeal.

A braided cord in red and cream tones is attached, along with a small metal bell that produces a gentle chime—traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and ensure safe travels.

Blending historical reference with folk craftsmanship, this Hida tsuko-tegata is a meaningful collectible and decorative piece, capturing the romance of travel and the heritage of one of Japan’s most culturally rich regions.
