VTT175 - Tsuko-Tegata from Izu 伊豆

This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a vintage wooden travel plaque from Izu (伊豆), a region celebrated for its scenic coastlines, hot springs, and literary heritage.

Crafted from warm-toned natural wood in the traditional pentagonal shape, the plaque features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, evoking the historic travel permits once required during Japan’s Edo period. The front is beautifully illustrated with a figure of the “Izu no Odoriko” (伊豆の踊子)—the dancing girl—an iconic cultural symbol made famous by Yasunari Kawabata’s classic novel. This imagery adds a poetic and nostalgic atmosphere, recalling romantic journeys through the Izu peninsula.

A vermilion seal stamp enhances its authenticity and decorative appeal, while the braided red-and-white cord—symbolizing protection and good fortune—allows it to be easily hung or displayed. The small attached bell produces a gentle chime, traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and safeguard travelers on their journey.

Blending literature, travel history, and folk craftsmanship, this Izu tsuko-tegata is both a meaningful souvenir and a symbolic charm of safe passage—ideal for collectors of Japanese memorabilia or admirers of classic Japanese storytelling.
