A Kyō ware (京焼) chawan, featuring a bold, hand-painted Daruma face and the inspirational proverb Shichiten Hakki, meaning “Fall seven times, rise eight.”

Crafted in the tradition of Kyoto ceramics, this matcha bowl features a warm ivory-coloured glaze with delicate natural speckling and subtle crackle-like textures. Its gently flared shape, rounded body, and balanced foot create a simple yet elegant silhouette, reflecting the understated beauty of Japanese tea culture.

The exterior is decorated with expressive indigo-blue brushwork depicting Daruma (達磨), the legendary Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, recognised by his fierce eyebrows, distinctive facial features, and determined expression.

“Seven falls, eight rises,” represents perseverance, resilience, and the determination to overcome life's challenges.

Daruma is one of Japan's most beloved symbols of good fortune and unwavering determination. Inspired by Bodhidharma, the founder traditionally associated with Zen Buddhism, Daruma figures are often given as gifts to encourage success, personal growth, and the achievement of one's goals.

The combination of Daruma's expressive face and this meaningful proverb transforms the chawan into more than a tea vessel — it becomes a gentle reminder to remain steadfast and rise again after every setback.
