This vintage Japanese kōgō (香合) is formed in the shape of a rooster, representing the Rooster (酉 / Tori) of the Japanese zodiac. The original box is labelled 干支香合 (Eto Kōgō), meaning a “zodiac incense container,” a type of small ceramic object often created for seasonal tea gatherings and New Year celebrations.
The piece is finished in the style of Kōrai seiji (高麗青磁), the Japanese term for celadon inspired by the celebrated green-glazed ceramics of Korea’s Goryeo period. A soft, translucent pale turquoise-blue glaze covers the rounded body, with delicate natural crackling (kannyū / 貫入) across the surface. The rooster’s comb is highlighted in a gentle pink tone, while lightly modelled feathers, eyes and facial details give the small sculpture a playful yet refined character.
Its rounded two-part construction cleverly transforms the bird into a functional incense container, with the upper body forming the lid. A pottery seal is impressed on the underside. The subtle variations in the celadon glaze and the visible crackle pattern give the piece the quiet, time-worn beauty especially appreciated in Japanese tea ceramics.
In the Japanese tea ceremony, a kōgō is used to hold small pieces of incense during the charcoal procedure. Zodiac-shaped kōgō are particularly appropriate for New Year tea gatherings (Hatsugama) or displays connected with the corresponding zodiac year.
