TB387 - Wajima-nuri Lacquer Vase 輪島塗
Vintage Item, never used. An elegant Wajima-nuri (輪島塗) lacquer vase, showcasing the refined craftsmanship for which the historic lacquer-producing city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture is renowned. With its tall, slender cylindrical form and deep glossy black surface, the vase has a beautifully restrained silhouette that allows its delicate decoration to stand out.
The lower section is ornamented with an overlapping circular shippō (七宝, “Seven Treasures”) pattern, rendered in fine gold-toned lines and accented with small stylised blossoms. Shippō is one of Japan’s classic auspicious geometric motifs, formed from endlessly intersecting circles. Because the pattern appears to continue without beginning or end, it has long been associated with harmony, enduring relationships, prosperity, and interconnectedness. The small floral details add a gentle decorative contrast to the otherwise minimalist composition.
Wajima-nuri is considered one of Japan’s most prestigious lacquer traditions. Developed over centuries on the Noto Peninsula, it is particularly admired for the strength and depth achieved through repeated stages of preparing the wooden base, applying reinforcing layers and building up numerous coats of lacquer before polishing. Traditional Wajima ware was designed not merely for beauty but also for longevity, with objects often intended to be treasured and used for generations.
