VIntage item, never used. A tea cup made by Kawahara Ganeidō (川原厳栄堂) in the tradition of Miyajima-yaki / Miyajima Osunayaki (宮島焼・宮島御砂焼) from Hiroshima Prefecture.

The original paper label remains attached and reads 「宮島焼 川原厳栄堂」, identifying it as a work of Kawahara Ganeidō. Miyajima ware is also known as Osunayaki (御砂焼) because its clay traditionally incorporates sacred sand associated with Itsukushima Shrine (嚴島神社) on Miyajima. Hiroshima Prefecture records that Miyajima ware has been produced since the Edo period and became known for incorporating sand from beneath the shrine’s main sanctuary.

Its origins are connected with an old custom known as osuna-gaeshi (御砂返し). Before setting out on a journey, travellers would receive sand from beneath Itsukushima Shrine as a talisman for safe passage. After returning safely, they would bring back sand from their destination and return an increased amount to the shrine as an expression of gratitude.

Kawahara Ganeidō (川原厳栄堂) is one of the historic producers associated with the continuation of Miyajima Osunayaki at Miyajimaguchi, opposite the island of Miyajima. Hiroshima Prefecture lists Kawahara Ganeidō among the recognised makers of Miyajima-yaki, a designated traditional craft of Hiroshima Prefecture.
