A charming vintage Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼) kōgō, or incense container, made by Shōju-an (匠壽庵). The box has a simple rounded form composed of two closely fitted halves, with a warm reddish-brown clay body that displays the rustic texture and earthy character associated with Shigaraki ware. The surface retains visible throwing marks and small natural irregularities, giving the piece a distinctly quality.
A kōgō (香合) is a small lidded container used in the Japanese tea ceremony to hold incense. It is particularly associated with the preparation of the charcoal fire, when incense may be placed near the charcoal to fragrance the tearoom. Because kōgō are often displayed and appreciated as individual works of ceramic art, they are collected for both their practical function and their seasonal or artistic character.
Shigaraki-yaki, originating in present-day Shiga Prefecture, is one of Japan’s historic ceramic traditions and is celebrated for its coarse natural clay, warm firing tones and expressive surfaces. Its understated, rustic quality has long made it especially compatible with the aesthetics of chanoyu, the Japanese Way of Tea.
