Vintage item, never used. This refined pair of Hagi-yaki (萩焼) yunomi tea cups is a beautiful example of contemporary craftsmanship rooted in tradition, created by Funasaki Tōru (船崎透) of Seishūgama (正舟窯). Presented in their original signed wooden box (tomobako), this set embodies the quiet elegance and tactile warmth that define Hagi ware.

Funasaki Tōru born in 1964 in Shimane Prefecture, he is now based in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is recognized as one of the leading contemporary Hagi ware artists. He trained under the Living National Treasure Kyuusetsu Miwa XI (Jusetsu) as well as Kyuusetsu Miwa XII (Ryusaku), where he mastered the highest level of ceramic techniques. Funasaki operates from Shoshu Kiln (Funasaki Kiln) located in Tsubakihigashi, Hagi City, where he continues to explore traditional Hagi ware through a modern artistic sensibility.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards. His work is known for preserving the traditional beauty of Hagi ware while incorporating a stylish and modern aesthetic that blends well with contemporary life. In particular, his use of the pure white glaze known as “Kyusetsu White,” inherited from his masters, is highly regarded for its refined and dignified beauty.

Each cup is finished in a soft, milky glaze layered with gentle blush tones of pink and warm beige. Delicate circular patterns emerge across the surface, formed naturally during the firing process, giving the pieces a subtle, almost floral impression. The glaze transitions gracefully toward the base, revealing earthy clay tones and a lightly textured foot that highlights the natural material.

True to Hagi-yaki tradition, the surface may develop fine crackles (kannyū) over time, gradually absorbing tea and deepening in character with use. This evolving beauty reflects the spirit of wabi-sabi, where impermanence and individuality are embraced.
