This set of Hagi-yaki 萩焼 tea cups is crafted by Tenpōzan 天鵬山, embodying the quiet elegance and warmth for which Hagi ware is celebrated.
Tenpōzan is located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture — one of Japan’s most historically significant ceramic regions. The kiln specializes in Hagi-yaki (萩焼), a style of pottery renowned for its soft textures, subtle color gradations.
Each cup features a gently rounded form with a softly flared rim, designed to rest comfortably in the hands. The glaze presents the characteristic Hagi aesthetic: a delicate. Fine crackle (kannyū) spreads across the glaze, creating a beautiful network of lines that will gradually deepen with use — a treasured quality of Hagi ware known as “Hagi no nanabake,” the way Hagi pieces mature and transform over time.
The unglazed foot reveals the natural clay body, slightly coarse and warm in tone, providing a pleasing tactile contrast to the smooth glazed surface. Subtle variations in color and kiln effects ensure that each cup carries its own individuality.
