A meaningful original Japanese shikishi calligraphy artwork dated Heisei 6 (1994).

The main inscription reads:
「億劫相別れて、須臾も離れず」
“Separated for immeasurable ages, yet never apart for even a single moment.”

This is a celebrated Zen expression associated with Daitō Kokushi (大燈国師, 1282–1337), the influential Rinzai Zen master and founder of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto.

It expresses the idea of an enduring connection that goes beyond time and physical distance. “Even if we are separated for a very long time, in a deeper sense we are never truly apart.” The deeper idea is that true connection is not limited by physical distance or time. Two people may appear separated, but their bond, memory, or spiritual connection can still remain.

The first half written on this shikishi contrasts 億劫, an almost immeasurably long span of time, with 須臾, an extremely brief instant. Despite apparent separation across endless time, there remains an inseparable connection.

The phrase can therefore evoke deep bonds, spiritual unity, remembrance, and a connection that transcends physical separation.
