SHP404 - Shikishi Artwork by Shibashin 柴真
SHP404 - Shikishi Artwork by Shibashin 柴真
An original Japanese shikishi artwork signed 柴真, depicting a pair of sheep in soft monochrome ink washes with subtle touches of pale green and warm pink.
The composition shows a ram and ewe standing closely together, creating a calm sense of companionship and harmony. The ram is distinguished by its large curled horns, while the second sheep is rendered more softly, allowing the two figures to overlap naturally.
The artist uses loose grey and black brushwork to suggest the animals’ wool and form rather than describing every detail. Darker strokes define the horns, faces, and legs, while faint washes build volume across the bodies.
In Japanese and East Asian imagery, the sheep / ram (羊) is associated with gentleness, harmony, kindness, and peaceful good fortune. It is also one of the twelve animals of the East Asian zodiac, making sheep imagery especially popular in seasonal and New Year-related art.
Signed 柴真 with a red seal at the upper right.
A lovely piece for collectors of original shikishi, Japanese animal painting, sheep and zodiac motifs, sumi-e, or vintage hand-painted artwork.
